A practical guide to pelvic floor recovery after childbirth by women’s health physiotherapists

Introduction to Pelvic Floor Recovery

Postpartum recovery extends beyond just physical healing; it encompasses regaining strength in your pelvic floor muscles, which are crucial for your overall well-being. Women's health physios specialize in assisting with this recovery, offering exercises, advice, and support tailored to each mother's unique situation.

Starting Your Recovery: The First Week

Day 1-3: Initial Healing and Care

The initial days after childbirth are about bonding with your newborn and beginning the healing process. Prioritizing rest and gentle care for your body during this period is essential.

Day 4-7: Introducing Pelvic Floor Exercises

Gradually, as you feel ready, you’ll start with basic pelvic floor exercises. These are designed to initiate the strengthening of the muscles stretched and possibly weakened during childbirth.

Consider SRC Recovery Shorts or Tubigrip to help provide abdominal support and compression to aid recovery. They are especially helpful for those with abdominal separation, pelvic girdle pain, or C-Section births.

Building Strength: Weeks 2-4

As you progress, the exercises and recommendations will evolve to further enhance your pelvic floor strength.

Our pelvic floor physios will give you a 3 weeks phone consultation to understand your birth, any symptoms, and give advice on your activity and loading so you can be physically active without impacting your pelvic floor.

We advise going for walks and performing gentle home strength exercises holding bub as weight for muscle loading. Generally, walking for up to 1 hour is good activity at this point. It is normal for activities to bring on more bleeding and blood clots, but if there is sensation of heaviness, or urinary leakage, please regress and have a chat with our team right away.
